Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP)

The EGIP is a major programme of Scottish Government funded improvements in the railway to be delivered by Network Rail. It is an investment that will contribute significantly to Scotland’s economy, communities and the environment.

EGIP is the next and largest building block in the phased programme of improvements in central Scotland’s railway network.

More than just Edinburgh and Glasgow…

By 2016, this programme of works will significantly improve connections, journey times and service opportunities between Edinburgh and Glasgow via all routes as well as to Alloa, Dunblane and Stirling from Scotland’s largest cities. In fact, it will deliver improvements right across the central Scotland rail corridor.

Why we are doing it…

- This investment is essential to our railways.
- It will help address current and expected future capacity issues.
- Faster and more frequent rail links between our towns and cities underpins economic growth meaning more jobs for more people.
- Electric railways is the most carbon efficient mode of mass transport and is an essential part of a future low carbon economy.
- EGIP will deliver faster and more reliable journeys on environmentally friendly trains.
